The Highlight Reel Was Never the Whole Story
Why do we only show the highlight reel — the house keys, the ring, the job title — and almost never the mess it took to get there? That question is at the heart of Episode 1 of The Mujeres of Milestones.
Hello, beautiful mujeres. I still can’t quite believe I’m writing this — the first real reflection from the first real episode of The Mujeres of Milestones. Episode 1 is where I actually started unpacking why this podcast exists: the pattern I kept noticing in my closest friendships, and in my own life. I wanted to bring some of that here too, for anyone who reads before they listen, or wants to sit with it a little longer after.
We Only Show the Highlight Reel (And Hide the Mess Behind It)
We live in a world obsessed with the final product. The house keys. The engagement ring. The baby announcement. The new job title. The new car. We love a polished highlight reel — but we almost never talk about the unedited, internal work that happens behind closed doors just to get there. Sometimes even after.
We don’t talk about the self-doubt. The fear. The late-night conversations, the crying, the messy middle of it all.
This podcast is my attempt at building a space for exactly that — the unglamorous, the beautiful, and the transformative journey underneath our biggest life shifts.
The Pattern I Noticed Across Every Friendship
Here’s the thing that actually pushed me to start this: my closest friends don’t all belong to one tight-knit group. They come from completely different eras and chapters of my life. And at some point, I started noticing a pattern across every single one of those friendships.
One friend was navigating dating. Another was buying a home. Another was getting married. Another was stepping into motherhood. On paper, these looked like completely different lives, completely different milestones. But underneath, I was having the exact same conversation with every one of them — fears, self-doubt, unspoken struggles, subconscious beliefs quietly blocking them from reaching a milestone, or keeping them from actually enjoying it once they got there.
So many of us are walking through these emotional battles in isolation, simply because nobody’s really talking about it out loud. We only get the highlight reel — never the version underneath it.
How I Rebuilt My Self-Worth After a Toxic Relationship
Watching my friends wrestle with those internal blocks made me look at my own life too, because I’d gone through my own massive internal shifts around what I believed I deserved.
That hit closest to home while I was in an emotionally unavailable relationship — one that was genuinely toxic for me. And I couldn’t break free from it until I stopped looking outward for what could fix it, and started actually confronting my own subconscious beliefs.
That’s where the real change came from. I had to sit with what I truly believed I deserved, and do the internal work of rewiring that belief.
Accepting good things into your life takes just as much internal work as letting go of the toxic ones.
That work is what allowed me to end that relationship. But it also opened up my perspective on who I was even willing to date — which ultimately led me to my fiancé.
Here’s what I want to be honest about, though: even after meeting him, the work didn’t stop. Meeting a healthy, emotionally available partner didn’t automatically mean I believed I deserved that.
There were so many messy, vulnerable moments — before him and after him — where I had to keep asking myself: why do I feel like I don’t deserve this? I had to actively work through that, and prove to myself I was actually worthy of receiving safe, healthy love.
Losing My Job Taught Me My Worth Isn't My Title
Relationships weren’t the only place this showed up. In early 2025, I was one of the many federal employees who received a layoff notice. It was a massive shock — though I don’t think I actually felt that at first. For the first few months, I think I was in a bit of a fog, traveling, telling myself I was fine.
Then, a few months later, it really hit me. I had to sit with questions I’d been avoiding for a long time: who am I without my job title? Who am I without a paycheck? Who am I without climbing the ladder?
Those thoughts crept in slowly, and it took me a long time to realize my worth was never actually connected to my job, my title, or my career.
Uncoupling my sense of self-worth from my job was one of the hardest things I’ve ever worked through — harder, honestly, than the relationship work. But it was also one of the most liberating milestones of my life.
And I genuinely believe that if I’d landed a new job right away, I never would have created this podcast. I wouldn’t have built this space I’m so excited to share with you.
Why This Podcast Exists
Walking through both of those fires — rewiring how I saw love, and rebuilding my identity outside of work — is exactly why this podcast needed to exist.
And going forward, we’re not just going to talk about mindset shifts in theory. We’re going deep into the actual tools — journaling prompts, visualization, EFT tapping, bilateral stimulation — practical ways to rewire the subconscious blocks that keep us from stepping fully into our milestones. There will be honest conversations, guest stories, and deep dives, every week.
Because every new chapter is an opportunity to see yourself, your possibilities, and your whole life differently.
The milestone isn’t the destination. It’s the invitation.
